Deng, as you may know, was repeatedly purged and then rehabilitated by
Mao, who had an unpleasant habit of selling out everyone who ever
supported, befriended, or followed him.

Deng, perhaps uniquely, got this treatment several times. (If Mao was
Chinese Communism's profligate rock star, then Deng was his long-
suffering accountant.)

Here goes.

Sometime in the early-to-mid 1970s, three men find themselves in a dark
and unpleasant prison cell in Communist China.

After some time passes, one idly asks another, "So, what are you in
for?"

The other responds, "Me? I've been here ten years so far. I supported
Deng Xiaoping."

"That's ironic," says the first. "I've been here almost two years now. I
opposed Deng Xiaoping."

More time passes, and the first man starts wondering about the third
man.

"Hey, you," he says. "What brings you here?"

"Well," says the third man, "I'm Deng Xiaoping."
